CEOs for all seasons? Probably not!

In this day of entrepreneurialism and disruption rules, understanding the differing roles and motivations of of the CEO can be important to a firm's intial launch and enduring growth.  Entrepreneur Magazine has run an article entitled "The Right CEO When Your Launch Might Be the Wrong CEO When the Company is Growing" by George Deeb, Managing Partner of Red Rocket Ventures, a Chicago based strategic growth advisor to firms.

Early-stage CEOs at firms with zero to $10mio in revenues need to be "hands on" and involved in key details from marketing, recruiting and strategy.  So inward facing and hands-on is the key mantra for getting the firm off the ground.

Later growth stage CEOs on the other hand needs to be more outward focused. Recruiting and retaining talent, building a strong board of directors and governance mechanisms, investor engagement, and seeking potential JV and M&A opportunities are value drivers.  This article argues boards and management teams need to appreciate the better CEO's qualities change over time and stage placement.  The full article on CEOs for each type of start up firm can be found here:http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/239943.
